Call Your Members of Congress and Ask for Support for Strong Funding for Child Nutrition Programs

With nearly one in four children at-risk of hunger in the U.S., it is extremely important that we support $1 billion per year in new investments for the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act. Malnutrition during early childhood impairs proper development of the nervous system and causes lasting emotional and cognitive problems. No child should have to go hungry and all children should have access to enough food and the right food to help them achieve their potential.

On June 10, the House Education and Labor Committee introduced its version of the Child Nutrition Bill, called “The Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act.” The bill would increase funding for child nutrition programs by close to $8 billion over the next 10 years.  This is short of the $1 billion a year goal, but is a higher level of funding that proposed by the Senate bill.  The Senate bill proposes only $450 million a year in additional funds for child nutrition program.

This is a critical moment to influence how much funding and what provisions are included in the final child nutrition legislation. Your action is needed to demonstrate broad, national support for a robust child nutrition reauthorization.

Please call your U.S. Representatives, both in the House and Senate, NOW and ask them to ensure that the child nutrition bill invests an additional $1 billion per year to increase program access and make significant progress against child hunger. You can explain your message further by explaining how childhood hunger has impacted the St. Louis community and St. Louis area food pantries. You may add the message that an investment of at least $1 billion per year is needed to allow us to increase program access and participation for low-income kids, to fill gaps in program delivery and to combat child hunger.
