March 2004 Voluntary Interdistrict Transfer Program
The following position was voted upon and passed with 16 for, 2 against and 4 abstentions.
There are few places where children can interact in the diverse environment, which is vital for learning to live together in a diverse world. The St. Louis Voluntary Interdistrict Transfer Program provides this atmosphere. If this program ends, there will likely be no place for this type of ongoing interaction to occur. In a highly segregated city such as St. Louis, there must be the environment that allows for the building of interpersonal understanding needed to enhance the economic and social well being of our city, and ultimately our country.
The Mission of the JCRC, to promote a just, democratic and pluralistic society, speaks to the continuation of a strong public school system where diverse religious, ethnic and cultural groups may interact. Therefore, the JCRC, while understanding the administrative and budgetary issues facing the St. Louis Voluntary Interdistrict Transfer Program, supports continuation of the Transfer Program.
