April 1989 Jonathan Pollard

April 25, 1989
The JCRC accepted the recommendation from the Domestic Issues Committee and the Executive Committee, that the JCRC take no action regarding the sentence of Jonathan Pollard, convicted for supplying information to Israel, as it is not a local community relations issue; however, the issue was left open for continued monitoring and future reconsideration.

April 20, 1993
Following the suggestion of a resolution passed by the St. Louis Rabbinical Association, the JCRC reconsidered its previous position of non-intervention (see page 2) and passed a resolution calling for the commutation of Mr. Pollard’s sentence. (Although anti-Semitism was determined not to have been a factor in Pollard’s sentencing, it was determined that the sentencing had become a community relations issue because of strong feelings aroused within the Jewish community.) The vote was 23 for, 7 against, and 4 abstentions.
