September 1987 Bork Nomination
It was decided with three abstentions (ADL, St. Louis B’nai B’rith Council, and ORT) and no opposing votes that the JCRC take a position opposing the nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court and to join the local coalition against the nomination. Bork’s judicial record, writings, and speeches placed him at odds with constitutional principles of civil liberties, free speech, and separation of church and state.
